Kerry commemorates Hariri, says US stands by Lebanese people in backing STL
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry commemorated former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in a statement late on Friday, saying the man known as "Mr Lebanon" had given his country hope during its "darkest days."

"He [Hariri] stood for peaceful change and the resolution of differences through conversations - not carnage," Kerry said.

"Ten years ago today, Hariri was assassinated because some feared he might succeed,” Kerry said, noting that this crime has escaped justice thus far.

In this regard, Kerry said “the United States stands by the Lebanese people in backing the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) and calls for punishing the killers.”

“We will continue to support Lebanon’s full sovereignty and its independence from external influences in all practical means,” Kerry said, as he spoke on behalf of U.S. President Barack Obama.

“We will continue to back the relevant international resolutions and the Baabda Declaration while working on distancing Lebanon from external conflicts. We will also support the Lebanese Armed Forces in their fight against extremism,” he said, adding “the LAF is the sole institution that is authorized to defend Lebanon’s borders and citizens.
