Grand Mufti Abdel Latif Daryan warned on Monday of the failure to elect a new president, urging lawmakers to choose a new head of state to re-activate the work of state institutions. Daryan’s comments were made in the Saudi city of Jeddah. The Mufti rejected the paralysis, saying the presidential polls should be held to revitalize state institutions. The cabinet assumed presidential authorities after Lebanese MPs failed to elect a successor to Michel Sleiman whose mandate ended in May. But deep disputes among cabinet ministers have thwarted many projects. “We should agree on the appropriate mechanism for the cabinet's work out of fear that there would be more paralysis,” he added. Prime Minister Tammam Salam had agreed with ministers to give their unanimous support on the cabinet decisions when Sleiman's term ended. He is now trying to amend the decision-making mechanism despite of the rejection of several ministers. As for the dialogue between Hezbollah and the Future Movement, Daryan voiced hopes that the talks would lead to an agreement over the said issue. The talks, which started last December under Speaker Nabih Berri's sponsorship in Ain el-Tineh, have eased down sectarian tension, he noted.
