Truck drivers stranded at Nasib crossing released

Lebanese truckers families, who have been stranded at the Nasib crossing at the Syrian-Jordanian border, have been informed on Thursday of the release of their loved ones.

The drivers said that they had spent the night at a "friend's house in Daraa" and were completing their required paper work to return to Lebanon within the upcoming 48 hours, hoping that the Lebanese authorities would provide them with the needed assistance.

The released drivers were identified as Mohammad Hamza, Mustafa Abou Arwa, Abdel Rahman al-Houry and Bader Alwan.

Meanwhile, it remains unclear if the truck drivers will be heading straight to Lebanon through any Syrian border crossing or whether they will return to Jordan to check on their gravely damaged trucks, the state-run National News Agency reported.

At least 30 drivers were stranded on the Syrian-Jordanian border's free zone last week after they crossed the border, as a group of rebels, backed by the al-Nusra Front, seized control of the crossing point following clashes with Syrian troops.

The move led Amman to close the Nasib crossing, which is the only functioning crossing between Jordan and Syria and is considered a vital gateway for Syria's government and for Syrian, Lebanese and Jordanian trade.

Three drivers returned to Lebanon on Tuesday, and around six of them crossed to Lebanon on Monday, one day after eight of them had returned.
