PM Salam urges solution to yearlong power vacuum

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Tammam Salam stressed on Tuesday the need to find a “consensual solution” to end the yearlong power vacuum, noting that the presidential void is “threatening the national entity”.

“Some parties are not in a hurry to end the presidential vacuum in spite of hazards facing the country,” Salam said in a televised address marking one year since Lebanon’s top post became vacant.

“The power vacuum is obstructing the interests of the Lebanese state and people,” he noted, saying “the Lebanese [parties] have given the impression that they are incompetent to solve their problems on their own”.

Turning to the government’s work, PM Salam said “the cabinet has managed to maintain security and stability, provide the army with weapons, approve a number of appointments and settle other files”.

Nonetheless, he lamented the fact that “major and urgent decisions were not taken given political differences”.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum last year on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.

Lebanon's presidency, allocated to the Maronite Christian community under Lebanon's sectarian division of power, is one of the three main political offices alongside the Prime Minister - a Sunni Muslim - and parliamentary speaker - a Shi'ite.
