Change and Reform bloc: We will attend Thursday’s cabinet session

The Change and Reform bloc considered on Tuesday the omission of the security appointments file from cabinet sessions "a clear constitutional violation.”

“Our ministers will attend Thursday’s cabinet session to address the absence of this file from its agenda,” Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said after the bloc's weekly meeting.

Kanaan also said the absence of this controversial file stands against the concept of power rotation in Lebanon, “which is required given the situation facing the country.”

Deputy Kanaan added that his bloc’s stance is crystal clear, saying it will not withdraw from the cabinet but will request that the security appointments file be the first item on the agenda.

On another note, the bloc addressed the survey that had been recently suggested in order to determine which Christian parties are the most influential in the country.

MP Kanaan explained that the majority of Christian parties he had recently toured, except for the Kataeb party, backed the proposal.

“We have taken the Kataeb’s objection into consideration, but we believe that it [the survey] does not violate the constitution and should therefore be held,” he added.

Lebanon officially entered presidential vacuum last year on May 25 after the six-year term of former President Michel Sleiman expired.

Lawmakers have repeatedly failed to choose a successor to the head of state. The impasse highlights the stark political divisions in the country.
