Speaker Berri defers presidential elections until August 12

House Speaker Nabih Berri deferred on Wednesday the presidential electoral session until August 12 due to lack of quorum.

Following the session, Head of Future Parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Siniora stated that Lebanese parliamentarians have failed once again to elect a new president due to the boycott of certain political factions, in reference to the March 8 camp.

On another note, MP Siniora noted that the Iranian nuclear deal is an important event, stating that Lebanese officials are keen on maintaining good ties with Tehran.

For his part, MP Georges Adwan said that the alliance between the Lebanese Forces and the Future Movement is for the benefit of Lebanon, adding that LF deputies are cooperating with the Future Movement, Speaker Berri, MP Walid Jumblatt and other deputies in a bid to hold an extraordinary parliamentary session.

Lebanon has been plunged into a presidential vacuum since May 2014 when the mandate of former President Michel Sleiman ended without the election of a successor.

Ongoing disputes between the rival March 8 and 14 camps over a consensual presidential candidate have hindered the polls.

The Loyalty to the Resistance bloc of Hezbollah and the Change and Reform bloc of Michel Aoun have been boycotting the presidential elections.
