Lebanon’s Environment Minister says waste problem “a national crisis”

Lebanon's Environment Minister Mohammad Mashnouq dubbed the country's waste problem is "a national crisis that needs to be addressed by all parties."

“The proper health standards had been met at the Naameh landfill but when organic waste was included, problems followed,” Mashnouq said in an interview with LBCI’s Nharkom Said TV Show on Monday.

“The capital Beirut, and its suburbs, is heavily populated but stretches over a small area. Therefore, the cabinet decided to allocate landfills outside this area,” the minister said.

Mashnouq added that tenders should be applied to resolve this problem, and unveiled a proposal to ship waste abroad in exchange for a transportation allowance to be paid by Lebanon.
