State Prosecutor Judge Samir Hammoud asked State Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Saqr Saqr to launch a probe into the events that took place on Saturday evening in central Beirut, and to task forensic doctors with examining the injured.
The judge also asked for drafting detailed reports regarding the injuries and the types of bullets (rubber or lead) used against the civilians, as well as the party that gave the order to fire at the protesters.
Judge Hammoud requested an investigation into the attacks against the security forces, while taking into account the preliminary investigations conducted by Beirut Police as a probe into a case of flagrante delicto.
On Saturday evening, scuffles erupted between “You Stink” civil society activists and security forces during a demonstration held in Beirut’s Riad El-Soleh Square to protest the government’s failure in resolving Lebanon’s pressing waste crisis.
During the protest, security forces used water cannons and tear gas to disperse activists and also fired bullets against them.
The activists who were protesting against the cabinet’s procrastination in resolving the alarming garbage crisis, stressed that they will not end their demonstration, calling on all Lebanese citizens to join them in their movement.
Accordingly, they announced an open-ended sit-in and to set-up tents in Riad al-Solh Square until the cabinet resignation.
