The history book dilemma where historians are writers and politicians are directors

In Lebanon, we can literally say that the hero is the one who will be able to write history. Specialized committees have been established since 2000 in a bid to develop a unified history book, but the committees’ work bumped into the political reality. Eventually, historians conceded that writing the history of such a divided country is impossible to achieve.

Historians chronicled events but politicians were the ones who put the final touches on the project, each one from his point of view, mainly in the 1970s.

So a history book project finalized on shaky grounds and ratified by the government would pave the way for greater problems.

Herein lies the question: Who will write the book, and according to which mentality and background? What type of professor will teach history, and from which perspective? Political, partisan, sectarian or secular?

In other words, is Lebanon ready for its own history?
