Activists continue their hunger strike despite sandstorm

Activists continued on Tuesday their hunger strike for the seventh consecutive day outside the Ministry of Environment’s building demanding the resignation of Minister Mohammad Mashnouq.

The hunger strike is still ongoing despite the sandstorm sweeping through Lebanon as well as the deteriorating health condition of some activists.

On Monday, activist Hassan Qteish was transported to a hospital after his health situation deteriorated.

On Sunday, activist Youssef El-Jerdi was also transported to a nearby hospital after joining other activists in their strike before the Ministry of Environment.

Several activists started a hunger strike on Thursday (September 03) outside the Environment Ministry’s building in Beirut to press for Minister Mohammad Mashnouq's resignation.

The protesters erected tents on the pavement facing the building.

The move came two days after riot police cleared dozens of "You Stink"activists who had occupied the environment ministry to press the minister to resign over his failure to deal with the unprecedented waste management crisis.

Several protesters were wounded during the operation.

A protest movement that started with rallies against the garbage piling up in the streets of Beirut garnered much support among the Lebanese people angered by the government's failure to find a solution after the main Naameh landfill was closed on July 17.

Protests now target the government and the entire political class. Protesters say the minister, Mohammad Mashnouq, has become a symbol of the state's inefficiency and corruption. Mashnouq has said he will not resign.
