Al-Fanar residents stage sit-in against waste dump in the area
Residents of Al-Fanar blocked on Monday the road leading to a piece of land used by the municipality as a garbage dump, calling upon the concerned sides to find a solution to the waste management crisis.
Lebanon has been grappling with a waste crisis following the July 17 closure of the Naameh landfill.
The cabinet pledged last year that the said landfill would be shut down and an alternative site would be found, however failed to live up to its promises.
The piles of garbage rotting in the summer heat triggered nationwide outrage and serious health warnings.
Following the closure of the landfill, civil society activists have been staging protests that grew into a popular uprising against the political class that has dominated the country since its civil war ended in 1990.
