EU official visits Lebanon to discuss STL

Deputy General Director for External Relations at the European Union Hugues Mangrelli said that PM Najib Mikati, Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi and Economy Minister Nicolas Nahas promised that Lebanon will live up to its financial commitment to the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL).

Mangrelli, who is visiting Lebanon as part of his neighboring countries tour, highlighted the importance of Lebanon’s international commitments.

Mangrelli stressed to Lebanese officials the need to move forward with a number of economic and democratic reforms, from improving electricity and fighting corruption in public finance to developing a free and strong judicial system. Mangrelli also touched on the necessity for social justice, free press and the development of civil society.

Mangrelli conveyed a message of support from the EU to PM Mikati, praising the high level of competency of the political figures taking part in the government.

Mangrelli voiced hope that Lebanon keeps its international commitments by continuing its financial contribution to the STL; adding that the EU is devising an alternative plan in case Lebanon fails to do so.

Speaking on the EU decision to impose sanctions on Syria, Mangrelli said that the EU urged the Syrian authorities to comply with its peoples’ will months ago.

“Given the Syrian regime’s oppression of the popular protests, it was only natural for the EU to impose severe sanctions in a bid to break the circle of violence”, Mangrelli added.
