Safadi: Adoption of electricity plan is a “big step”
Finance Minister Mohammad Safadi described the adoption of the electricity plan as a “big step”, underscoring the importance of joint efforts that eventually led to an agreement amongst ministers to allocate the budget funds - $1.2 billion- in four installments.

“The cost of the electricity plan will be included in the budget for the next three years, this way the treasury will not have to bear any extra-budgetary burdens”, Safadi said, “let us not forget that the huge chunks of the 2012 budget have already been earmarked to build dams, gas pipes and roads”.

Safadi stressed that the decision to allocate funds in four installments eased the discussions and opened the possibility for dialogue with Arab backers.

The government approved a controversial electricity bill Wednesday after a last minute compromise over the funding of the project was reached, ending weeks of negotiations that threatened the cabinet’s unity.
