Another Lebanese historical landmark falls victim to negligence

The historical Jeb Jennine Bridge is still standing the test of time on the riversides of the Litani River.    

This bridge stands out from all others, thanks to its distinguished architecture and prominent arches embracing ancient waters that have flowed since the era of the Roman Empire.    

The World Heritage Committee has ranked this bridge, one year ago, as a “tourist landmark” while the U.S. Development Agency allocated US $ 118,000 to its restoration and maintenance. However, the U.S. agency has recently decided to offer the donation to another country given that the directorate of archeology, and despite the approval of the cabinet, has refused to receive the donation and thus the collapsing bridge is still in a lamentable condition.   

In this context, Khaled Said Sharanek, Head of the Union of the Al Buheira Municipalities, told LBCI that the municipal union and the municipality of Jeb Jennine are ready to provide the necessary funds to rescue the bridge, adding that the obstacle lies in obtaining the approval of the directorate of archeology.
