Baragwanath: STL cannot consider “false witnesses” issue

The President of the Tribunal, Sir David Baragwanath confirmed on Tuesday that the STL cannot look into the issue of “false witnesses” because it does not fall within its jurisdiction.

During a press conference, Baragwanath announced that trials will begin next year, confirming that “no trial has been held so far and there is no witness in the case”.

“If the Lebanese government and the Security Council agree on granting us the jurisdiction to consider such a case, we will certainly do so. Until an agreement is reached, we are not to look into the case unless it fell within the framework of evidence”, he stressed.
