PM Hariri says agreement reached to announce state of economic emergency

Prime Minister Saad Hariri declared that agreement was reached to declare a state of economic emergency and to stress the stability of the Lebanese currency.

Agreement was also reached to continue the implementation of the decisions issued by the meeting of August 8, he stated.

Following the meeting held in Baabda to discuss the financial and economic situations, Hariri noted that the political leaders agreed to commit to the accurate implementation of the 2019 state budget and passing the 2020 state budget, which must include at least a 3% surplus while banning hiring at public sector and working on establishing a retirement system.

The prime minister pointed out that an operation room will be established to deal with the border crossing, revealing that they will also work on reducing the volume of the public debt through partnership between the public and private sectors.

For his part, MP Mohammad Raad reassured that there will not be any tax on gasoline, or raise of the Value Added Tax, stressing that the salaries will not be touched.
