Gunrunners selling to Syrian protestors caught at border

Lebanese security forces made a number of arrests on Tuesday, catching a gang of gunrunners attempting to smuggle arms into Syria to support anti-regime protestors, a judicial source told As Safir daily.

The arrested were trying to smuggle pump action shotguns into Syria, and admitted that they bought the weapons from an arms dealer in Wadi Khaled on the Lebanese-Syrian northern borders.

The newspaper said that the army intelligence tracked the plot earlier in the week after it raided a neighborhood of the Beirut district of Tariq al-Jdideh.

The arrested- whose initials are N.A -, from Tripoli, purchased 200 shotguns and gave them to A.H, a Lebanese citizen from Wadi Khaled residing in Tripoli, who was in charge of smuggling the weapons across the border.

The armed forces seized in the raid rocket propelled grenades (RPG), hand grenades, Kalashnikov rifles, night-vision goggles and Inerga-type RPGs, As Safir said.
