Bassil: Electricity plan seals our place in history

Energy Minister Gebran Bassil said that approving the electricity draft law in parliament is a major political achievement, adding that, with this project, he gave the ministries their roles back.

“The other camp failed to make me succumb”, Bassil said during a press conference, adding that the logic of rejecting projects by force has fallen.

Bassil thanked the cabinet, the Parliament and especially House Speaker Nabih Berri for facilitating the approval of the bill and finding an honorable solution.

He also conveyed his gratitude to the minority and former PM Fouad Siniora for the positions they took, stating that it was their fierce opposition to the plan that made it famous and ensured its place in history.

“The electricity plan, set by the previous government and approved by the current, has now been confirmed”, Bassil said adding that the Ministry has only taken the first step of many.

Bassil said that the project was approved without any side deals or compromises, and unveiled the other camp’s lies.

“The other camp previously mentioned suspicious transactions and refused the suggested amount of $1.2 billion, then approved the draft law. What changed?” he asked.

Bassil said that transactions will be duly based on bids, adding “we will be working with all of the funds”.
