REPORT: Rallies across Lebanon in solidarity with Gaza

A sit-in was held in downtown Beirut and outside the U.N. building in condemnation of the Israeli assault on Gaza, upon the invitation of the Lebanese Communist Party and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

Protesters raised banners calling for the unification of Palestinian factions that are resisting Israel and seeking to free Gaza. They recalled the daily plight of the residents of the coastal enclave.

In Tyre and in the northern Bourj el-Barajneh Refugee Camp, 1,000 Palestinian refugees held mass protests calling for avenging Gaza victims. In Tyre’s al-Bas refugee camp, the Hamas Movement received condolences for the martyrdom of Ahmed al-Jaabari.

In north Tripoli alike Palestinian factions also received condolences for the assassination of Al-Jaabari.

Israel appeared to catch Hamas off guard on Wednesday, killing its top military commander Ahmed al-Jaabari in a missile strike and then targeting guerrilla munition dumps in air raids.

But rockets soon started raining down on southern Israel, killing three Israeli civilians in a single blast early Thursday. If such fatalities mount, the government will come under huge pressure to ratchet up the military campaign.
