Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International demand Lebanon release of US journalist

Lebanon’s General Security should immediately release a US journalist who was arrested on November 16, 2021 after raiding her apartment and whose detention is now arbitrary, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said on Wednesday in a joint statement.

General Security officers did not allow Homsi to contact her lawyer for six days after her arrest.

The General Security later issued a deportation order and continued to detain her "arbitrarily" despite that the Public Prosecution has issued an order for her release on November 25, according to the statement.

“General Security’s refusal to release Homsi despite the public prosecution’s order is a blatant abuse of power and a very worrying indication of the security agency’s lack of respect for the rule of law,” said Aya Majzoub, Lebanon researcher at Human Rights Watch.

This as it was not clear what were the reasons that prompted the Lebanese General Security to raid Homsi's apartment, and to keep her in detention.
