Nahhas: State can be decisive on raising taxes
Labor Minister Charbel Nahhas told Voice of Lebanon that the state can be decisive in imposing new taxes in order to raise revenues to cover any decision to increase salaries.

He added that the role of the state is to come up with solutions and not merely act as mediator between two sides.

"The state is not a mediator to patch up differences but instead must have an economic plan to reform the situation to prevent the Lebanese from migrating," the minister said.

The minister stressed that the real problem is not the planned strike on Wednesday to demand higher wages.

"The state is before a challenge: either it takes a decision to rectify the course or leave the situation chaotic."

Nahhas ridiculed the proposal of the private sector to raise the minimum wage by LL80,000 only. "

The LL80,000 raise proposed by the private sector is a rude joke," the minister said, renewing his proposal to raise the salaries by 20 to 30 percent.
