Former Lebanese House Speaker Hussein Al-Husseini dies at 86
On Wednesday morning, the former Lebanese House Speaker, Hussein Al-Husseini, died at 86 after being infected with severe influenza.

Al-Husseini entered the parliamentary assembly in 1972 as a deputy from Baalbek-Hermel and presided over the House of Representatives from 1984 to 1992.

The late politician holds a diploma in Business Administration from Cairo University in 1963, worked as director of the management of the electric power generating and distribution company in Baalbek, and was the mayor of Shmistar Municipality, in the Baalbek-Hermel Governorate.

As a Lebanese politician, Hussein Al-Husseini was a former speaker of the Lebanese parliament, whose efforts led to the brokering and fathering of the Taif Agreement, which led to the end of the Lebanese Civil War in 1990.

Al-Husseini was also a co-founder of the Amal Movement and succeeded Musa Al Sadr as leader of the movement until 1980.

When announcing his death, Caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, said that “today Lebanon has lost an authentic national and constitutional figure,” declaring a three-day national mourning.
