REPORT: Mountainous roads covered with ice as storm recedes

The Russian snowstorm which hit Lebanon during the past few days, reached the Lebanese coast as the snow covered all the Lebanese regions. In this context, the town of Sehayleh which is at an altitude of 400 meters was covered with snow.

In the Bekaa, the roads were blocked as the thickness of the snow reached 15 centimeters, while al-Masnaa - Sham road was cut off and more than 500 houses were trapped in Bar Elias with water and ice. On the other hand the road of Daher al-Baydar was blocked where the thickness of the snow reached 2.5 meters.

In Hermel, the residents were suffering from a shortage in bread over the past few days, while the situation started to improve as of Thursday at noon when a number of young men tried to open the road. The region also suffered from power shortages.

In Bsharre, a layer of ice had accumulated over the roads, while the snow kept on falling till the early morning hours reaching the regions of Koura.

Meanwhile in the village of Gebrail in Akkar, a stone quarry owned by Hassan completely collapsed leaving a trail of damage behind.

As for south Lebanon and Tyre to be specific, residents of the area joined efforts to drain out excess water from homes and stores in conjunction with the municipalities of the region.

In Nabatieh, the storm left streets, trees, cars and crops in shambles with several support walls collapsing in the area. However the greater part of the destruction targeted the electrical and phone networks in the area.

As for Kfarroman, fields were flooded rendering the crop season obsolete.

On the other hand, a maritime rescue unit of the civil defense found the body of the child Youssef Rakan al-Fadel at Khaldeh shore, after he went missing in the floods in Jadra resulting from the heavy rainfalls of the storm.

For his part, Education Minister Hassan Diab called on officials in private and official schools as well as technical institutes to resume the academic work normally and to compensate the students for the forced suspension of courses for three consecutive days, due to the snowstorm which hit the Lebanese regions.
