GCC issues protest letter against Aoun's statements

Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) , Abdul Latif Al-Zayani, handed the Lebanese Chargé d'Affaires to Riyadh a protest letter against the statements voiced by the Free Patriotic Movement's Leader MP Michel Aoun five days ago.

According to the letter, Aoun spoke of the internal situation in Bahrain in a "demeaning and misleading way" that reflects "interests and commitments that everyone is aware of", stressing that Aoun's words are completely untrue.

The letter added that Aoun's statements contradict the "historical and brotherly relations" between Lebanon and the GCC.

Last week, in a interview with an Iranian TV station, Aoun criticized the International Community and the Arab League for its lack of support to Bahraini protesters, accusing them of injustice.

Since February 2011, ongoing protests are erupting in Bahrain at the height of the Arab Spring, demanding greater rights for Bahrain's Shiite majority and an end to the absolute power of the Sunni ruling family.
