Scholars held on Monday a meeting with the Interior Minister Marwan
Charbel, the Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn and Judge Hatem Madi.
Following
the meeting of Muslim scholars in Dar al-Fatwa, Lebanon's Grand Mufti
Mohammad Rashid Qabbani asserted that the attacks on the four sheikhs
was deliberate, stressing that there is a provocateur.
Qabbani called on the Shiite leadership in Hezbollah and Amal movement to uncover the perpetrators of the attacks.
Earlier
in the day, a
sit-in was held by religious scholars in front of
As-Siddiq Mosque in Tripoli to condemn the attacks on four Muslim
Sheikhs in Beirut Sunday evening.
Sheikh Mustafa Alloush, one of
the Scholars, said that the "Scholars are a red line that must never be
tampered with. Anyone attacking the scholars must have his hand cut."
Alloush called for punishing the perpetrators and putting them in jail.
On
another note, Grand Mufti Mohammad Rachid Qabbani visited the
al-Makased hospital to check on the 2 Sheikhs who were attacked on
Sunday in the region of al-Khandak al-Ghamik.
In this context,
Grand Mufti Qabbani said that denouncing the situation is hopeless and
called on authorities to take severe measures against the aggressors.
Qabbani
said that Sunni and Shiite leaders along with March8 and March14 forces
should bear responsibility of this attack since it is the result of
tense rhetoric.
The Grand Mufti said that he is not accusing anyone, and called for investigations in order to prevent strife.
He
also blamed "those who are attacking the Mufti and calling for his
resignation," he said in reference to heads of government who had been
holding discussions over the past week to resolve the Dar al-Fatwa
crisis.
For his part, Secretary-general of the Future Movement, Ahmad Hariri visited on Monday the al-Makased to check on the two sheikhs.
He demanded that Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Najib Mikati cut off their visit to Rome and return to Lebanon to "face this issue".
Lebanese Armed Forces arrested on Sunday 3 persons
involved in attacking 2 Sheikhs from Dar al-fatwa, Mazen Hariri and
Ahmad Fakhran, in the region of al-Khandak al-Ghamik, while they were
heading to Mohammad al-Amin Mosque.
The Muslim clerics were immediately taken to al-Makassed hospital for treatment.
As
soon as the news spread, a number of supporters of the Al-Jamaa
Al-Islamiya gathered outside the al-Makassed hospital while others
cut-off the Corniche Al Mazraa, and Kaskas roads to denounce the attack.
The
attack was not only limited to the 2 Sheikh in al-Khandak al-Ghamik;
reports said that 2 other clerics were attacked in the Shiyah area.They
were identified as Sheikh Omar Imami and Ibrahim Abdul Latif. They were
transported to the Shtoura hospital after receiving first aid treatment
in a Beirut hospital.
