This is the week of pending and suspended local issues and the week of long overdue democratic milestones in the Arab world.        

On the local level, the promotion issue is pending due to the president’s refusal to approve it because of what is currently known as “the knot of Col. Wissam El Hassan”. The issue of illegal activities in the village of Lessa is pending and its solution depends on the outcome of Tuesday’s cabinet session. Also, a dispute erupted last night with residents and one perpetrator from Al Muqdad. The dispute spilled into Hady Nasrallah highway in Dahia. The Tarshish incident is pending while the fate of Hezbollah’s telecommunications grid is still unknown.       

Other pending governmental issues will have to wait for Wednesday’s cabinet meeting in the Grand Serail, since tomorrow was declared a day of mourning and PM Najib Mikati is visiting the Kingdom to offer his heart-felt condolences.         

It is noteworthy that although tomorrow was declared a day of mourning, schools, banks and administrations will not be closed. However, flags will be lowered to half-mast and TV and radio programming will be interrupted during the funeral for Crown Prince Sultan.       

48 hours before the cabinet session, the remarks made by former deputy PM Elias el-Murr following his meeting with PM Mikati, where he was that the PM will commit to funding the STL and to uphold all of Lebanon’s international commitments.        

On the international front, relations between Washington and Damascus are degrading further: Washington temporarily withdrew its ambassador to Syria following the smear campaign against him, but stressed that this was not an official recall. The U.S. also said that it has no intention to expel the Syrian ambassador, however, Damascus recalled him to Damascus for consultations.        

Also in international news, the al-Nahda party in Tunisia reaped the fruit of the Arab revolution with its sweeping victory against the sectarian and leftist parties.
