MP Michel Douaihy hails government decision to dismantle illegal arms

Lebanese MP Michel Douaihy emphasized the significance of August 5 and 7 as turning points that asserted the state’s authority over illegal weapons, describing the decision to dismantle unauthorized arms as the result of sustained political efforts.

In a post on X, he pointed to the genuine sovereign opposition in parliament as instrumental, crediting its resistance to the 'resistance axis' with paving the way for reclaiming legitimate authority in Lebanon.

Douaihy added that despite heavy pressure, the opposition managed to steer the country toward what he called a "glorious August."

He also criticized Hezbollah for invoking “sectarian legitimacy” as a new justification for holding onto its weapons, saying the group was acting in the interest of Iran’s Islamic Revolution rather than Lebanon’s national interests. He argued that the justification would not hold, asserting that the weapons had lost their legitimacy and purpose.

Douaihy reaffirmed support for dismantling illegal arms, stressing his bloc's commitment to implementation and framing the decision as a reclaimed act of national sovereignty.
