Jumblatt says will study new electoral proposals after PSP appealed extension of electoral deadlines

Following his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh, the National Struggle Front MP Walid Jumblatt said on Friday that he held consultations with Berri over a number of electoral laws that may pull the country out of the current situation, noting that he will soon examine the proposals.

In this context, Jumblatt stressed the need to hold the upcoming parliamentary elections, to maintain security and to form a ‘national unity government’ with the consent of all the Lebanese parties.

Earlier, the Progressive Socialist Party petitioned the extension of the electoral deadline to the constitutional council.

In this regard, the PSP Justice Commissioner Nash'at al-Husnieh told LBCI that the petition does not aim at supporting the 1960’s electoral law but to uphold the democratic system instead, noting that Deputy Speaker MP Farid Makari, State Minister Ahmad Karami, MP Marwan Hamade and MPs of the National Struggle Front bloc have all signed the petition.

According to the constitutions, the president, the speaker or 10 MPs may petition the law. Should the petition be accepted by at least seven out of the 10-member constitutional council, it would become effective.

In this context, head of the council, Issam Suleiman, said he will call for a session next Monday to study the appeal.

The council has one month to either accept or reject the petition.
