Arab League chief welcomes Lebanon's plan to enforce state exclusivity on arms

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed the Lebanese government's adoption of a practical plan to implement its decision to restrict all weapons to state control, calling it the path to Lebanon's stability.

He stressed that the exclusivity of arms in the hands of the state is a fundamental principle of sovereignty that cannot be ignored or violated under any pretext.

Aboul Gheit said the government's decision to grant the army a timeframe to enforce the measure on the ground should be met with cooperation and support from all Lebanese citizens and those committed to preserving Lebanon's sovereignty and independence.

He also urged influential powers in the international community to pressure Israel to withdraw from the occupied Lebanese territories and cease targeting sites inside Lebanon.

He added that the precise and comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached last November is essential to restoring peace throughout the country.
