Constitutional Council rejects NSF appeal requesting to annul suspension of electoral deadlines

        
The State-run National News Agency reported on Monday that the Constitutional Council rejected the National Struggle Front appeal requesting the annulment of the law suspending deadlines for submitting nominations for the parliamentary elections.      

It is worth noting that ten Deputies have resorted to the Constitutional Council in order to ask for the annulment of suspending the deadlines of the 1960’s electoral law.      

On April 26, 2013, the Progressive Socialist Party petitioned the extension of the electoral deadline to the constitutional council.        

In this regard, the PSP Justice Commissioner Nash'at al-Husnieh told LBCI that the petition does not aim at supporting the 1960’s electoral law but to uphold the democratic system instead, noting that Deputy Speaker MP Farid Makari, State Minister Ahmad Karami, MP Marwan Hamade and MPs of the National Struggle Front bloc have all signed the petition.        

According to the constitutions, the president, the speaker or 10 MPs may petition the law. Should the petition be accepted by at least seven out of the 10-member constitutional council, it would become effective.
