Gas cylinders… ticking time bombs ready to explode at any moment

All Lebanese homes contain at least one gas cylinder, making them armed with ticking time bombs ready to explode at any moment.

Around 7,000,000 gas cylinders are in circulation in Lebanon; most of these cylinders are now well-worn, and 1,772,000 were switched out in 2003. However, there is no governmental control over the safety of gas cylinders, and ordinary people are unable to check it themselves.

When Lebanon introduced a batch of new cylinders in 2003, each citizen paid an extra 1,650 LBP. However, only a fraction of Lebanese citizens benefitted from the new cylinders, but all of them felt the hit in their wallets. The head of the Public Works and Energy Committee Mohammad Kabbani told LBCI that whoever will carry the financial burden of any future cylinder switch is still under discussion.
