Maronite patriarch urges end to violence, stresses Lebanon’s choice of peace

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi said during Palm Sunday Mass that he stands in solidarity with residents in southern Lebanon who remain in their homes despite ongoing violence.

Al-Rahi said what was most painful was the killing of a father and his son on the road to Debel, as well as the deaths of journalists, medical teams, army personnel, and civilians in several areas.

“Our choice is peace,” he said, adding that “the olive branches we carry are not merely symbolic, but a clear declaration that we seek peace, hold on to it and live by it despite all challenges.”

He added, “Enough war, killing, and destruction. A person’s strength is not in violence, but in the ability to uphold peace, preserve dignity, and remain steadfast in truth.”
