Patriarch Rai meets MP Aoun, tackles electoral draft laws

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun met on Sunday with Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai in Bkerke.

Following the meeting, MP Aoun said that he briefed Patriarch Rai over the latest developments in the electoral draft law file.

He also noted that the only alternative for the 1960 electoral law "is to put the other draft laws on vote in parliament."

“We have three options: holding the upcoming parliamentary elections based on the 1960 law, extending the parliament's mandate or accepting the political vacuum,” Aoun added.

It worth mentioning that Speaker Nabih Berri might call on Thursday for a parliamentary session to convene to vote on the extension of the parliament.

Lebanon's rival parties are sharply divided over reaching a new electoral law that would govern the upcoming parliamentary elections set for June despite the rejection of the majority of them of the 1960 law.

However, most parties submitted their candidacies under the 1960 law.
