PM Salam says Lebanon to pursue peace, not normalization with Israel

Lebanon will review and develop its plan to restrict weapons to state control in light of developments over the past months, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said.

Salam said a potential meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is premature, stressing that any high-level talks require significant preparation, careful timing and must be tied to tangible progress in negotiations, with prior agreement on expected outcomes.

He emphasized the need for negotiations with Israel alongside internal talks aimed at extending state authority, restricting weapons to the state and implementing the "Nation Shield" plan.

Salam said Lebanon is not moving toward normalization but toward peace, noting that Beirut launched the Arab Peace Initiative and reaffirmed it at the Riyadh summit, which was also attended by Iran.

He added that communication with Hezbollah is conducted through its ministers in the government.
