MP Jumblatt says Tripoli's clashes will not divert attention from Syrian crisis

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Tuesday that clashes taking place in Tripoli will not divert attention from the complicated situation in neighboring Syria since the Syrian regime "aborted" all political initiatives to end the crisis.

MP Jumblatt called on Tripoli's leaders and some "internal and external parties" to put an end for the weapons’ smuggling inside the city, urging residents to support the Lebanese Army's efforts.

In is worth noting that the port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Supporters of either side have clashed frequently, heightening fears that the war is spilling over into Lebanon.
