When internet fails: Lebanon needs a lasting solution

Internet services were disrupted for 3 hours on Monday morning due to a fault in Lebanon’s connection to the underwater India-Middle East-Western Europe cable. Normal service resumed in the early afternoon when the traffic load was diverted from a cable between Beirut and Tripoli to another line on land.

A diagram received by LBCI showed that the internet service was at a near standstill on Monday morning.

Minister of Telecommunications Nicolas Sehnaoui told LBCI that the disruption may have been caused by a ship passing over the cable. He added that a specialized ship with technicians from the Ministry of Telecommunications will be prepared to repair the cable. The task should be completed within 15 days, Sehnaoui said.

The executive director of IDM, Maroun Chammas, told LBCI that the solution lies in automating the transfer of service from lines that have failed to those that are still operational.
