Study Says Millennials Aren't Having Sex

With the ever-expanding array of dating apps meaning a potential sexual partner is never more than a swipe away.

A study, conducted by researchers at Florida Atlantic University, found that millennials are having less sex than previous generations.

According to the study, 15% of millennials aged 20 - 24 said they had no sexual partners since turning 18; for people the same age who were born in the 1960s, just 6% said they hadn't had sex.

Some experts believe that today's young people are better educated about sexually transmitted infections and porn is never more than a few clicks away, which could explain the above-mentioned statistic.

However, Dr. Helen Fisher, an anthropologist and Chief Scientific Advisor to Match.com, believes that there are two main reasons behind why millennials are not sleeping with each other.

First, millennials are more ambitious in their careers and second, they are more cautious about getting into relationships.

Fisher said that millennials are focusing on their careers over sex and love.

“The more you have to offer a person in terms of education and earning power and social net worth, the more likely you are to find a partner of higher 'mate value,'” she added.

As for online dating, the expert pointed out that dating apps serve up men and women on a plate, but they also mean we’ve never had more choice. Why commit to one guy when there might be a better one - someone smarter, more successful, better-dressed - just around the corner?

“Millennials are pickier, more cautious, more careful, and more ambitious,” she explained.

“The sex is going to come along, they know that. It’s everywhere for them when they want it,” Fisher said. “They’re choosing not to have this because they’re trying to do something else.”
