Clinton: Syrian opposition should be empowered

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday urged European and other countries to impose more sanctions on Syria and President Bashar al-Assad, saying more pressure was needed to force him to step down.

Clinton, repeating U.S. calls for Assad to leave office and make way for a democratic transition, urged more countries to follow the U.S. lead and impose punishing sanctions on his government in response to its crackdown on political protests. “The violence must stop and he needs to step aside.

“Syria must be allowed to move forward. Those who have joined us in this call must now translate our rhetoric into concrete actions to escalate the pressure on Assad and those around him, including strong new sanctions targeting Syria's energy sector to deny the regime the revenues that fund its campaign of violence.” she said in a press conference earlier this week.

Clinton added that, as with Libya, the international community should encourage Syria's opposition to develop a clear roadmap for the democratic path forward. Clinton said she had had very positive discussions with Libya’s new interim rulers and pushed for the international community to help Libya on the way to democracy.

“The international community, led by the United Nations needs to help the Libyan people and their leaders pave a path to peaceful, inclusive democracy, one that banishes violence as a political tool and promotes tolerance and pluralism," she told reporters.
