Agence France Presse cited sources in Peru as saying that Peruvian police detained the wife of a Lebanese national accused last year of allegedly having close links to Hezbollah and planning attacks in Peru.
According to the sources, 37-year-old Carmen Carrion Vela, who has dual US and Peruvian citizenship, was arrested Thursday in the district of Surquillo on charges of terrorism in collaboration with her Lebanese husband Mohammad Ghaleb Hamdar.
Hamdar, 29, was detained in October 2014, on suspicion of "implementing Hezbollah's scheme internationally to target Jewish communities," after police found the remains of explosive material in his garbage, according to EFE news agency.
Hamdar's lawyer reportedly told AFP that his client "was tortured by police to admit his ties to Hezbollah."
He is also charged of forging his entrance documents to Peru by using a Sierra Leone passport.
