More than 70 million people below poverty line in 3 months due to inflation
The sharp rise in global food and energy prices has resulted in the spread of poverty, which has affected 71 million people in low-income countries in just three months since March.
The UN Development Program warned in a statement that the acceleration of poverty "is much faster than the shock of the Covid-19 epidemic," citing the war in Ukraine as one of the factors driving inflation, which Russia denies.
According to the UN program, "the provision of funds to families in a targeted manner is more equitable and cost-effective than measures to support energy in general."
It also emphasized that the countries involved will require the multilateral system's assistance "to secure their needs."
