Rubio: US urging China to pressure Iran to reverse its moves in Strait of Hormuz

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington has made clear to Beijing that any support for Iran would harm bilateral relations between the two countries.

Speaking to Fox News, Rubio said the issue of support for Iran will be raised during trade talks with China.

He added that the United States hopes to persuade Beijing to play “a more active role” in convincing Iran to step back from its actions in Gulf waters.

“Iran was planning to use its missile and drone arsenal as a shield to protect its nuclear program,” Rubio said.

He added: “We are trying to persuade China to intervene and pressure Iran to reverse its moves in the Strait of Hormuz.”

Rubio also stressed that the United States is seeking to manage its disagreements with Beijing “to avoid wars and preserve global stability.”
