From his first day in training, the Royal Air Force’s new recruit was a star who didn't take long to be singled out for special missions.    

His talents have saved numerous British lives in war-torn Afghanistan, and the Americans and Danes were so overwhelmed he was called in to assist them also.    

Hertz, a German shorthaired pointer, is a fearless hero of the war against the Taliban. As a one-year-old puppy, Hertz joined the Royal Air Force and after excelling at drugs- detection classes, he was moved into special classes where he was taught how to sniff out electronic equipment.    

After 13 months in Afghanistan, the dog found over 100 items of contraband.      

“Hertz, without a doubt, saved the lives of countless British and Allied service­men and women due to his intelligence and amazing nose," his RAF handler, Sgt Jonathan Tanner, said.      

“While he was in Afghanistan there wasn’t a single attack on Camp Bastion – and he played a part in that," he added.

The dog's job was to sniff out barred electronic devices brought into the camp by Afghani civilians working there.          

Hertz has been nominated now as Public Service Animal of the Year at the Daily Mirror and RSPCA Animal Hero Awards next month.
