REPORT: Eight fishermen kidnapped and taken to Syria, released

A patrol from the General Security in the North succeeded on Saturday, based on the instructions given by President Michel Sleiman and following efforts deployed by Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim, in releasing the eight fishermen who were kidnapped earlier by a Syrian military boat and taken into the Syrian territories.

Witnesses had reported that a Syrian military boat kidnapped eight fishermen, adding that they were taken into the Syrian territories.

The state-run National News Agency (NNA) had also reported that Syrian coastguards opened fire at a Lebanese fishing boat off the coast of the northern border town of al-Arida.

The agency added that the owner of the boat, identified as A. R., hails from the town of Bebnine.

Accordingly, residents of the Hay el-Baher neighborhood in al-Arida town blocked the al-Arida international road on the Lebanese-Syrian border to protest the abduction of Lebanese fishermen.
