REPORT: Charbel condemns self-imposed security, says checkpoints are state’s duties

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel declared on Wednesday that the Lebanese government rejects the phenomenon of self-imposed security, stressing that setting up checkpoints and searching citizens are the duties of the official authorities.

During a press conference, Charbel said that members of the municipal police do not have the right to set up checkpoints in the towns, noting that their responsibility is limited to monitoring suspected people and vehicles and inform the security apparatuses of any suspicious event.

The caretaker minister warned against attacking the embassies of foreign countries, pointing out that the embassies’ security is the responsibility of the Lebanese state.
