REPORT: One killed, 2 injured in an attempt to smuggle members of al-Nusra Front into Lebanon

The Lebanese Army Command declared on Wednesday that the driver of a van carrying Syrian passengers refused to stop at an army checkpoint in Lebanon’s Arsal region and attempted to escape despite several warnings.

Accordingly, the army members opened fire towards the van, killing one passenger and injuring two others, one of whom succeeded in fleeing with the other passengers, while the driver returned and turned himself in to the army forces.

The military police teams rushed to the scene and launched investigations to reveal the circumstances of the incident.

Earlier in the day, the state-run National News Agency had reported that a van was attempting to smuggle several members of the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front from Syria into Lebanon, through the northeastern Lebanese border town of Arsal.

The NNA added that when the driver refused to stop at the checkpoint, a clash erupted leaving one member of al-Nusra Front dead, and two other Syrian nationals injured.
