REPORT: Iraqi Shi'ite militia says fired mortar bombs into Saudi Arabia
        
An Iraqi Shi'ite militia said on Thursday it had fired six mortar bombs into Saudi Arabia's desert as a "warning message" to the kingdom to stop "interfering" in Iraqi affairs.            

"The goal was to send a warning message to Saudis to tell them that their border stations and patrol are within our range of fire," Wathiq al-Batat, commander of al-Mukhtar Army militia, told Reuters by telephone.

Batat said the militia had also been angered by Saudis and Kuwaitis who he said had insulted the daughter of the Prophet Mohammad.           
This comes after an Iraqi official said Iraqi security forces have not fired anything towards the border with Saudi Arabia.              

"We checked with the commanders of the borders and they told us that they opened an investigation with all the forces that are deployed there," said Jabar al-Sa'adi, head of the security committee for Basra's provincial council. The Basra province borders Saudi Arabia.                      
"There were no rockets or anything fired towards the Saudi border by security forces," he said.                         

Earlier, the kingdom's border guards agency said six mortar shells landed near a remote Saudi border post close to Iraq and Kuwait on Wednesday, but caused no damage.          
             
"Six mortar shells fell in an uninhabited area near the new al-Auja border guard centre of Hafr al-Batin in the Eastern Province. Thank God no damage resulted from it," said General Mohammed al-Ghamdi, the border guard media spokesman, in a statement carried by the official Saudi Press Agency.
