REPORT: Cardinal Rai congratulates Lebanese state for Saudi grant to army

Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai praised on Wednesday during new year mass Saudi Arabia's financial contribution to the Lebanese Armed Forces, hoping that it would pave the way for political initiatives among rival parties.

He also congratulated the Lebanese state, President Michel Sleiman and the army on the Saudi grant, hoping that the presidential elections will be held on their due time.

Sleiman's six-year term ends in May.

But there are fears that disputes between the March 8 and 14 alliances would lead to a vacuum in the country's presidency.

President Sleiman announced on Sunday that Saudi Arabia will donate three billion dollars to purchase French weapons for the Lebanese army.
