REPORT: Girl killed, 10 injured in Tripoli clashes

Clashes erupted on Thursday between residents of Jabal Mohsen and Bab al-Tabbaneh following reports emerged that a citizen identified as Walid Barhoum succumbed to his wounds during a shooting that took place in the northern city of Tripoli.

This as gunshots were heard between the two neighborhoods as streets were deserted and shops were closed.

The Lebanese army responded to the source of fire, deploying its units in the region and raiding Tripoli’s internal markets in search of fugitives.

Also, gunshots were heard in Tripoli’s Syria Street and Talaat al-Omari as tensions overshadowed over the region.

This as 10 year-old girl Fatma al Ashi was killed and 10 other
people were injured in the Hariri Project in Tripoli.

The injured were identified as: Mohammad al –Sahyouni, Houzayfa al-Ali, Mohammad Ayoub, Talal Darwishm Bashar Nasri al-Ardouki, Salah al-Meshehawi, Tarek Batikha,al-Hajj Omar al-Abdo and a member of the al-Sayour family known in the name of Abou Jama, in addition to an unidentified woman.

On another note, the Secretary General of the Arab Democratic Party Refaat Eid told LBCI that “what is happening to the Alawite citizens in Tripoli is a stain on the forehead of all Lebanese politicians and security leaders.”

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
