REPORT: Tensions run high in Lebanon's Tripoli
Raging battles were reported on Thursday between Tripoli’s Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen after citizen Mahmoud Kanjo was killed by sniper fire in al-Hara al-Jdide in Jabal Mohsen.         

Earlier, gunmen opened fire in Tripoli’s markets to force the shop owners to close their doors.         
On another note, an unknown assailant tossed a sound bomb behind al-Siddiq Mosque in central Tripoli, causing panic in the area.          

Cautious calm had been overshadowing the northern city of Tripoli, after a night of fierce clashes, where machine guns and rockets were used.             

The Lebanese Armed Forces responded to the sources of fire and launched flares over the regions of clashes.          

The death toll from the latest round of clashes in Tripoli, which erupted last Thursday, reached 16 while the number of injured jumped to 81.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
