REPORT: Speaker Berri calls for parliament to elect new President next week
Speaker Nabih Berri called on Wednesday for a parliamentary session to elect a new president on April 23.

The session is scheduled to be held at 12:00 pm.

President Michel Sleiman's six-year term ends on May 25. But the Constitutional deadline for parliament to start convening to elect a new president started on March 25.

Under Lebanon's political system, which seeks to guarantee representation for its various sects and religions, the president must be a Maronite Christian, a community which is divided between March 8 and March 14 supporters.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea, is the only Lebanese leader who submitted his candidacy for the presidency offcial1y.

He spent 11 years in jail for political murders and other killings during Lebanon's civil war, the only warlord imprisoned after the conflict.

Other potential presidential candidate is Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun.

President Michel Sleiman has been in office since 2008.

Before becoming President, he served as Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces from 1998 to 2008, after Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) commander Émile Lahoud took office as President in November 1998, Sleiman succeeded him, taking his place in December.

Sleiman was later elected President and was sworn into office on 25 May 2008.

Several names were advanced as potential candidates for the presidency back then, including Michel Aoun, Nassib Lahoud, Boutros Harb, amongst others, each of whom was affiliated either to the March 14 or March 8 camps.

Michel Sleiman was generally accepted as being the only possible, unifying candidate in the midst of the deep divisions that prevailed at the time.

When the vote was finally held in Parliament on 25 May 2008, Sleiman was elected with a majority of 118 votes out of 127.
